Cul-de-sac ?

Thoughts starting the week are on the term cul-de-sac.
Growing up we played on dead end streets and coves. It was great, little or no traffic, you could have an entire ball game without getting disturbed. Lately, predominantly on HGTV, these terms seem to have become obsolete and in their place, cul-de-sac. Puzzling, to me, are changes that seem to happen because someone on TV uses a term and people pick up on it thinking it somehow sounds more sophisticated or makes them more interesting. The term is of French origin and refers to, you guessed it, a dead end. Simple changes, like this, seem to erase parts of our traditions and our childhoods.
So the thought today is Americans are fickle this way, I can remember when we had a nanny or baby setter now we, seem, to have au pairs, and yes American media uses the term au pair incorrectly and often.
